Vaping is a huge problem amongst young mob around Australia. Between 2019 and 2023, there was a 6% uptake in vaping amongst youth alone, proving that tobacco companies have been doing a great job at making vapes appealing to our young ones, especially with the introduction of colourful packaging and fun flavours.
At the start of 2024, our staff put our heads together to think of a new way to teach young mob about the dangers of vaping. We realised that standing up and talking about nicotine addiction and the harmful chemicals in vapes wasn't working - our young ones needed to hear it from themselves...and so the video project: 'Vaping is a Fool's Game' was born.
To produce Vaping is a Fool's Game, DDHS enlisted the help of Global Headquarters Motion Media Company. Global HQ worked with our Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) team to workshop the project with a group of deadly students from the Clontarf and Stars Foundations in the Greater Darwin Region. The students wrote the lyrics and decided where they'd like scenes in the video to be shot. They recorded the clip with Global HQ and got a great insight into all that goes into producing a rap music video!
The finished video - Vaping is a Fool's Game - premiered at the opening of the 2024 Deadly Cup Carnival on Sunday 7 July. It was also published on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, and was covered by 9 News Darwin, the NT News and ABC Darwin. It is hoped that the clip will go viral, so we can spread the word to other kids around Australia and encourage them to "Say no to vapes!".
A huge thankyou to Global Headquarters Motion Media Company for their support in this project, and for working with the Clontarf and Stars students to plan and create the clip. Thank you to Jade, Connor, Tyreece, Le'Laiki, Gabriel, Anthony and Toufoa for their words and talent (all on display in the video), and to our Danila Dilba families who gave up their time to join in the filming at one of our clinics.
